How Final Peace Works
A simple, secure process that takes an afternoon to set up and lasts a lifetime. Works on any computer. No technical expertise required.
From the founder
Why I built Final Peace
Before the step-by-step below, here's the whole story in my own words — the problem I watched families face, and what Final Peace does about it.
Greg White, founder · about 6 minutes
Plug In & Set Up
Insert the USB drive into any computer and open the file in your browser. Create your personal PIN and choose a recovery image from a grid of nine — your visual password reset, with no security questions to forget.
- Works on any computer — Mac, Windows, or Linux
- Everything is self-contained on the USB drive
- Nothing to install, no accounts to create
- Visual PIN Recovery — pick your image, no security questions
- No internet connection needed

Start with the Crisis Card
Final Peace opens to a Crisis Card — the eight items your family needs first. Fill those in tonight (about 15 minutes) and your family is already protected. Then work through the 10 full sections at your own pace, including Medical Directives for the hospital scenario nobody plans for.
- Crisis Card on the dashboard — 8 essentials, not 200
- 'Need to find' checkbox on every field with a printable to-do list
- Medical Directives section: advance directive, DNR, Healthcare POA
- Auto-saves on tab switch and every 60 seconds
- Your choice of light or dark, three text sizes including a large-print high-contrast mode, and warm prompts — not a spreadsheet
Create the Unlock Codes
Generate two 6-word patterns using NATO phonetic alphabet words like ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE. Give one pattern to each of two trusted people. Optionally enable Emergency Access — so a single key holder can unlock medical info and bill-paying accounts on their own, while the rest stays sealed.
- Two-person estate access — both keys required together
- Emergency Access — one key alone for medical/bill-paying info
- Optional Trusted Key for spouse solo access (revocable anytime)
- Printable Heir Information Packet for your family and attorney
- NATO phonetic words — easy to write down, impossible to mishear
Store It Safely
Put the USB drive somewhere secure - a fireproof safe, safe deposit box, or with your important documents. Your heirs know where to find it when the time comes.
- No maintenance required
- No subscriptions to renew
- Works for decades
- Update anytime by plugging it back in
The Word-Pattern Key System
Simple enough to write on paper. Secure enough for your most sensitive information.
How It Works
Instead of complex passwords, Final Peace uses 6-word patterns from the NATO phonetic alphabet (ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE, etc.). These words are familiar, easy to spell, and impossible to mishear.
Two-Person Security
You create two different patterns and give one to each of two trusted people. Neither person can access the drive alone - both patterns are required together.
Heir 1
Pattern A
Heir 2
Pattern B
Optional: Trusted Key for Spouse
If you want your spouse or partner to have immediate access without needing a second person, you can create an optional Trusted Key. This single-person key can be revoked at any time and doesn't replace the two-person heir access system.
Four Ways to Open the Drive
| Access Type | Who Uses It | What They See |
|---|---|---|
| Owner PIN | You, while you're alive and well | Everything — full read/write |
| The Two Unlock Codes | Your two heirs, together | Everything they need to settle the estate |
| Trusted Code (optional) | Spouse or adult child, alone | Read-only access, you can revoke anytime |
| Emergency Access | Either code holder, alone | Only medical directives, insurance, and bill-paying accounts — cryptographically separate from the rest |
Forgot your PIN? Visual PIN Recovery lets you pick your unique recovery image from a grid of nine. No security questions to forget. No call center to phone.
What You'll Document
10 comprehensive sections cover everything your family will need to know. Fill in what you can, skip what doesn't apply, and come back anytime to add more.
Access & IDs
Password manager credentials, personal IDs (SSN, driver's license, passport, Medicare, Veteran's ID, DD-214), phone/computer PINs, safe combinations, alarm codes, security questions
Who to Call
Attorney, accountant, financial advisor, insurance agent, executor, employer/HR, all healthcare providers — names, firms, phones, what they handle. Change an advisor once and it updates everywhere they're listed
Financial Accounts
Banks, credit cards, investments (IRA, 401k, brokerage), crypto wallets, multiple properties with deed and parcel details, vehicles with titles and plate-renewal, pensions, Social Security, money owed to and from — plus a Money Map & Bill Calendar of what auto-pays from which account and what would lapse if a card closes
Insurance Policies
Life (with beneficiaries), health, home, auto, umbrella, long-term care, disability — each flagged for emergency vs. estate access
Legal & Medical Directives
Will (location, executor name/phone), trust, POA. Advance directive, DNR, Healthcare POA. Vital records, organ donation wishes, tax returns
Home & Daily Life
Service people (plumber, HVAC), WiFi, utilities, subscriptions, pets (vet, meds, who takes them), funeral wishes, obituary draft, celebration of life notes
Digital Legacy
Facebook (memorialize vs delete), Instagram, email handling, cloud storage instructions, recurring subscriptions to cancel — your digital life doesn't die with you
Memberships & Commitments
Storage units, clubs, gym contracts, timeshares, flight programs — with instructions: cancel, transfer, sell, or keep
Business Interests
Multiple businesses supported: name, role, partners, buy-sell agreements, operations instructions, records locations
Personal Messages & Notify List
General message, private letters, permission statement, People to Notify (exportable as CSV — a file any spreadsheet can open in 25 years), Do Not Contact list
How it compares to the other ways
Every way people keep this information, compared on what actually matters. We marked our own weak spots too — no option is perfect, including ours.

The two marks against us are real: Final Peace needs a computer, and a $2 notebook is cheaper. Everything else on this table is why the notebook costs your family more in the end.

You Don't Have to Do It All Today
Final Peace saves automatically as you work. Fill in the sections that matter most first, then come back over days, weeks, or months to add more. There's no deadline, no pressure, and no subscription expiring.
Most people complete the essentials in 1-2 hours, then add details over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Final Peace and how it works.
Why doesn't Final Peace work in Safari or Firefox?
Final Peace was built so your information never leaves your USB drive. There's no account, no cloud, no server. Everything stays on the drive.
To do that, the app needs a browser that can read and write files on your USB directly. That capability is called the File System Access API, and it exists in Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, and Arc. It does not exist in Safari or Firefox.
The same feature that keeps your information off the internet is what limits which browser you can use. We think that's the right trade — but it does mean Safari and Firefox users will need to install one of the supported browsers to use the app.
On a Mac? Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge both work, both are free, and both install in under three minutes:
Once installed, right-click the file on your USB drive named Double_Click_This_To_Start_Final_Peace.html and choose Open With → Google Chrome.
What if I lose my USB drive?
Your information is encrypted and protected by your PIN and key patterns. Without these, the data cannot be accessed. We recommend keeping the drive in a secure location like a fireproof safe or safe deposit box. You can always purchase a replacement and re-enter your information.
Can I update the information after I've set it up?
Absolutely. Simply plug the USB drive back into your computer, enter your PIN, and make any changes you need. Your information saves automatically as you work.
How do updates work? Do I have to download anything?
No downloads, ever. Click 'Check for Updates' at the bottom of the app, then 'Update Now' — Final Peace fetches the update, verifies it's genuinely from us, installs it, and asks you to restart. Your saved information is never touched. Final Peace never asks you to download or run a program.
What happens if one of my code holders passes away or becomes unavailable?
You can update your key patterns at any time. Simply access the drive with your PIN, generate new patterns, and distribute them to new trusted individuals.
Does Final Peace require an internet connection?
No. Everything runs locally on your computer from the USB drive. Your sensitive information never touches the internet, which is a key part of our security design.
What computers does Final Peace work with?
Final Peace works on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. Open it with Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, or Arc — no software installation required. Safari and Firefox are not supported because they cannot access USB drives directly. On a Mac, Chrome and Edge are both free and install in under three minutes.
How is this different from a password manager?
Password managers are great for day-to-day password storage, but they require subscriptions, accounts, and technical knowledge to access. Final Peace is designed specifically for the moment when you're no longer here — with a physical device your heirs can find and a simple word-pattern system anyone can use.
What if my heirs aren't tech-savvy?
Final Peace is designed with simplicity in mind. The word-pattern key system uses familiar words (ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE) that can be written on paper. Every kit includes The Heir's First Hour Script — a printable read-aloud walkthrough that guides them step-by-step through unlocking the drive.
What if I'm not dead — just in the hospital?
That's exactly why Emergency Access exists. One of your code holders can use their code alone to unlock a cryptographically separate file containing your medical directives, insurance card, primary doctor, and the accounts that pay the bills. The rest of your information stays sealed until both key holders are present.
I don't know all this information off the top of my head.
That's the whole point of the 'need to find' system. Every field has a checkbox you can tick when you don't know the answer. Save the file, and Final Peace prints a to-do list of exactly what's left. Come back when you have it. Even a half-finished kit is far better than a blank notebook in a drawer.
Is my information backed up anywhere?
No. Your data exists only on your USB drive. This is intentional — we believe your most sensitive information shouldn't exist on any server, anywhere. We recommend keeping your drive in a secure, fireproof location.
